Pelvic floor physical therapy can be a sensitive topic for many people and possibly cause anxiety or fear about what it may entail. At Purpose Physical Therapy, we want to provide you with a safe space to allow you to seek the appropriate care that you may need. Here are some things to expect at your first appointment.
1. A thorough conversation: This is the most valuable part of your first appointment. It is important to hear about your symptoms, how long you have been dealing with them, what you may have tried before, other practitioners you have seen, your past medical history, and more! This is where we will learn about you, your story, and your goals.
2. A full orthopedic assessment: Pelvic floor physical therapy is more than just assessing your pelvic floor. It is important to look at the complete picture of your body to see areas of weakness or immobility.
3. A pelvic floor assessment: This part of the assessment will only be performed if the client gives clear verbal and written consent. There are many other ways we can get a good picture of how your pelvic floor is functioning without performing the pelvic floor assessment. The pelvic floor assessment can include visually observing the pelvic floor muscles, gentle internal palpation of the soft tissue to assess for tone, and strength and endurance testing of the pelvic floor.
4. Education: Your PT will provide you with education and understanding of the findings of the assessment.
5. A plan: You and your PT will come up with a plan to address the findings, reduce your symptoms, and most importantly, help you achieve your goals.
