The Importance of Pre/Post Partum Physical Therapy in South Pasadena

Pregnancy and childbirth are incredible feats of the human body, but they can also take a toll on your physical health. Many women experience a range of symptoms during and after pregnancy, including:

  • Back pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Incontinence
  • Diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Poor posture and balance

These symptoms can significantly impact your daily life, making it difficult to care for your baby, perform household tasks, or return to work. However, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Physical therapy can help alleviate these issues and empower you to enjoy this special time with your growing family.

How Purpose Physical Therapy’s Physical Therapists Can Help

At Purpose Physical Therapy, our experienced physical therapists offer a range of evidence-based treatments to address pre and postpartum symptoms. Our services include:

1. Pain Management and Improved Movement

Our physical therapists will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the root cause of your pain. We then develop a personalized treatment plan that may include:

  • Manual therapy techniques to alleviate pain and improve mobility
  • Therapeutic exercises to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility
  • Modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation to reduce pain and promote healing

2. Strengthening and Stability

Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken core muscles, leading to issues like back pain and poor posture. Our physical therapists will guide you through exercises to:

  • Strengthen your core, back, and pelvic floor muscles
  • Improve stability and function
  • Prevent future injuries

3. Balance and Coordination Enhancement

As your body changes during pregnancy and postpartum, your balance and coordination may be affected. We incorporate balance and coordination exercises into your treatment plan to:

  • Prevent falls and injuries
  • Improve your ability to perform daily activities with ease
  • Boost your confidence in moving and caring for your baby

4. Post-surgical Rehabilitation

If you’ve undergone a c-section or other surgery related to childbirth, physical therapy is crucial for a smooth recovery. Our therapists will work with you to:

  • Regain strength and flexibility in the affected area
  • Manage post-surgical pain
  • Safely return to your normal activities

I was very fortunate to use Purpose Physical Therapy to rehabilitate my foot and ankle. They exercised a lot of kindness in understanding the type of injury I sustained and put together a smart action plan. Over the course of a year I saw Sarah once a week or every other week for two stints. A year later, I am very happy to share that my mobility and strength has greatly increased! Simple movements no longer give me pain and there is a marked improvement in matching my non-injured foot. I loved the manual manipulation, the strengthening exercises and the BFR targeting. Sarah is extremely thorough and always asking for input. I feel confident as I continue this healing journey that I now have the tools to get to and maintain 100%.

I was very discouraged when I made an appointment at Purpose Physical Therapy with Dr. Sarah Cooke. I had been to several PT clinics over the past three years with a chronic back problem that was just getting worse and made walking and other activities of daily living challenging at best. Purpose Physical Therapy is a small practice with two therapists who are both doctorally prepared with several years experience working in larger clinics. These past experiences led them to develop a unique philosophy in that they are building a practice they intentionally will keep small enough so the therapist and client are able to consistently work together to form a partnership focused on the client’s unique treatment needs and how to maintain their goals following discharge. While Dr. Sarah used more traditional PT methods she was also creative in developing activities that met my unique needs and have helped me become more functional in my daily life. I discharged equipped with a plan that included several back exercises to continue on my own and participation in online yoga and tai chi classes that I also began while still working with Dr. Sarah. I consider Purpose Physical Therapy a 5 Star program and highly recommend them to anyone in need of physical therapy.
